Our very first overnight RV trip was to Gettysburg, PA!
We took only one night to test all of the things we got for the RV & to make a list of things we may have forgotten.
i.e. I forgot the condiments....
We learned that we should make a RV trip checklist for each adventure.
Though most of the normal RV stuff we keep in it, we still need to make sure we have the things we use in our everyday life.
Planning meals, checking the weather for appropriate clothing & bringing only the stuff needed during that timeframe for the children's schoolwork are some of the things I do before we head off.
I'm working on the checklist but as soon as I am done, I will share it with you in our next post.
Gettysburg Campground was lovely! We had a spot right by the creek which was a hit for the kids.
We have planned to return & stay longer to enjoy the surrounding area, as well as the campground again.
Bring extra clothes! Nothing is more enjoyable as a parent than watching your children experience & learn new things. Not that it is their first time playing in a creek, but every time they enjoy doing it.
Some campsites have a place for you to do your laundry. There are places to do laundry along the way. But if you are going for a short time, 1-3 extra pairs of clothes is recommended. We often reuse jeans & pjs as long as they are clean so I typically only bring 1 extra of those.
Let the clothes dry! If they've been splashing in the creek & have wet clothes, hang them to dry!
Trust me, it is mucho unpleasant to have wet clothes balled up in your RV for a couple of days.
I usually hang them inside-out on our awning or on the picnic table seats.
One of the things we bought is a collapsible "laundry basket". I have a smaller one for our garbage too. When parked, I put it on the passenger's seat in our motorhome.
The next morning we had breakfast, had the kids do their schoolwork & then packed up to head to Gettysburg National Military Park.
Real quick: Yes, we have the kids do schoolwork during the school year when we are on the road. Yes, they have summer books I have them work on three days a week.
I LOVE the summer bridge book I have gotten for Hayden, who is now going into second grade, in the past so she has it again this year. Geo has one too this year even though he is only going from PK3 to PK4 but the bridge book will bring him to a Kindergarten level. The school they attend while at home, has a great PK4 program that challenges them in some Kindergarten levels.
Our 2019-2020 school year will be over tomorrow!!! So they will go right into their summer, 3 days a week books starting this Monday.
We were only able to spend the afternoon walking around & seeing a small portion of it.
We were unable to get our NP passport stamped since the visitors center was closed due to the pandemic.
We learned after we had walked a bunch that there is an audible tour you can take in your car that tells you all about the different landmarks along the way. Next time!
The plan is to return during a reenactment. I'm kind of a history nerd but I like to go & see rather than read a book on it. I do both, however, we are a hands-on experience kind of family.
And that's it! Short & sweet. It was a good little test trip to figure out what we will need on the longer trips & we were able to test all of the appliances, tanks & other assorted things.

After getting everything setup,
we played in the creek, built a fire, made dinner,
took a walk through the campground & got ready for bed.
